What Blessing Do I Say Before Food?
Jewish tradition requires blessings before eating, acknowledging that all sustenance comes from God. Different categories of food have specific blessings, reflecting the variety of divine gifts in the natural world.
The Six Main Food Blessings
HaMotzi (Bread)
For bread made from wheat, barley, spelt, oats, or rye:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם הַמּוֹצִיא לֶחֶם מִן הָאָרֶץ
Translation: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.
Mezonot (Grain Products)
(who creates various kinds of nourishment).
HaGefen (Wine/Grape Juice)
(who creates the fruit of the vine).
HaEitz (Tree Fruits)
(who creates the fruit of the tree).
HaAdamah (Ground Produce)
(who creates the fruit of the ground).
SheHakol (Everything Else)
(through whose word everything came to be).
The Hierarchy of Blessings
When eating multiple foods requiring different blessings, there is an order of precedence: HaMotzi covers all other foods eaten with bread. Mezonot is next in priority. Then HaGefen. Then HaEitz and HaAdamah. SheHakol is last.
Special Cases
Mixed Foods
if fruits predominate.
Cooked or Processed Foods
New Fruits

Mindful Eating
These blessings slow us down before eating, creating mindfulness and gratitude. Each bracha acknowledges a different aspect of God's creation, from the earth that produces vegetables to the vine that yields wine.
